Rafter A sloping beam, parallel to the other rafters that together form the main structure of a roof.

Rail Horizontal support or member in door or fence.

Random Rubble A basic stone wall construction with no attempt at bonding or coursing.

Rebate A rectangular recess along the edge of a work-piece, usually as part of a joint; to cut such recesses.

Relieving Arch An arch above a lintel or beam that takes the weight of the wall above.

Render / Rendering A wall covering. Internally usually plaster and externally usually cement but sometimes pebbledash, stucco or Tyrolean textured finish.

Renovation Repairing an item to its original or near-original condition.
|
|
Re-pointing Removing mortar from between brick joints and replacing it with new mortar, to prevent damp.

Re-Roof The existing roof covering is removed and replaced with new under felt and batons. The original tiles/slates are either reused or replaced.

Residual Current Device (RCD) A type of fuse which monitors the flow of electrical current through the live and neutral wires of a circuit. When an RCD detects an imbalance caused by earth leakage, it cuts off the supply of electricity as a safety measure.

Retention An agreed amount of money held back by the client as an insurance against repair.

Reveal The vertical side of an opening in a wall.

Ridge Top of a pitched roof.

Ridge Tile A semi-circular tile made from concrete or clay, covering the ridge where two sloping roofs meet.

Ring Main Power circuit for sockets.
|
|
Rise Vertical distance from one stair tread to the next.
|
|
Riser Upright part of a stair OR vertical water pipe from the mains.
|
|
Rising Damp Moisture soaking up a wall from the ground below, causing plaster decay, rot in timbers and damage to decoration.

Rising Main A pipe that supplies water under mains pressure, often to a storage tank in the roof.
|
|
Rolled Steel Joist (RSJ) A steel beam used for structural support.
|
|
Roof Pitch The angle at which a roof slopes.
|
|
Roof Spread Outward bowing of a wall caused by horizontal pressure applied by a roof that has been badly constrained. (See also Collar).

Roof Truss Prefabricated structural timer framework that supports a roof.
|
|
Roof Valley The junction where two separate roofs meet.
|
|
RWP Rain water pipe, which collects rainwater and feeds it into the drainage system.
